Aloha Committee Members,
I strongly support Resolution 234-25. As a resident of the Moku of Wai'anae who has supported
ending military leases on O'ahu, I urge the Hawaii County Council to protect the lands of
Hawai'i Island. Although I support the readiness of military personnel to be fully trained ahead
of any operation they may be required to attend, because all life is valuable, I do not support
the continued destruction and desecration of our Pae'Aina to obtain this goal. Training at
Pohakuloa has already caused a great degree of harm to the land through fires, contamination
of the soil, air, and water resources, and is a threat to many endangered species of the area.
Pohakuloa is a sacred area with important cultural and environmental value. The military's use
of this land is incompatible with the values of aloha'aina, as we strive to protect our wahi pana
now and into the future so that we may never lose connection to our past. Please support
Resolution 234-25.
Mahalo,
Kahula O'Brien
