Aloha Committee Members,
I am writing to share my strong support for this resolution.
As someone who cares deeply about Hawaii Island, I am very troubled by the US military's training at
Pohakuloa. It has already burned nearly 20,000 acres, contaminated the land, and put endangered
species at risk. Beneath this area lies one of our most important aquifers, the source of fresh water for so
many of us, and I do not believe the military has shown the ability to protect it.
I am also deeply concerned about depleted uranium left in the soil, which can become airborne during
exercises and carries serious health risks.
For me, Pohakuloa is notjust land. It is a wahi pana, a sacred place with irreplaceable cultural and
ecological value. Continued military use is simply incompatible with caring for this place in the spirit of
aloha 'aina.
Please, I urge you to support this resolution to protect the land, the water, and the people of Hawai'i
