Mahalo Council member James Hustace for working with the Waimea Community Association in it's request
for support of our annual Waimea Twilight Christmas Parade. This is our 651h year holding this community
event; we are the second oldest parade in the State.
This parade consistently attracts spectators from far and wide. Some come from across the island, some from
other counties, and some folks say that they plan their vacations or visits, around our parade.
The parade is the success that it is because of the well -organized committee which is a committed group of
individuals who have consistently organized the parade, making improvements over the years to maintain
safety for all participants and spectators. The parade route was lengthened a couple of years ago (in order to
increase the viewing locations/provide improved spectator safety), which caused the need for additional
narrator stations, and required more funding.
Our community is generous about sponsoring narrator stations, but we also have the cost of the special duty
police officers, to help maintain order and assist with the closing of roads at 5 locations. We are asking for
$3,000 to cover the cost of the police. Last year we spent about $2,600 and this year we hope to have them for
a little bit longer, and if they are available, we would add a couple more people, hence the $3,000.
I apologize for not being present to answer any questions that you might have, but I am on the mainland
meeting my new grandson.
