Dear Members of the Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions:
V
I strongly support Resolution No. 286-25.

Passing this resolution will help ensure the protection of Honolulu Landing in the District of Puna and
avoid the privatization of property recognized by the State of Hawaii as being historically significant to
Hawaii communities.
The historic importance of the Honolulu Landing property was officially recognized by the Department
of Land and Natural Resources when it found the property to be eligible for listing in the Hawaii
Register of Historic Places, an official list of properties that have been recognized for their
significance to the history, architecture, archaeology, or culture of Hawaii communities. If this property
is not timely publicly acquired by the County of Hawaii, private development and the loss of
preservation of this historical site is not a matter of if, but when.
Beyond its historical significance, this property also continues to be deeply valued by Hawaii
communities as a place to fish, gather, rest, build community, and more. The public acquisition of this
property is imperative to protecting the exercise of Native Hawaiian traditional and customary rights
and public access to the shoreline. Protecting this land will support the health and longevity of the
Hawaii County community.
In light of the foregoing, I strongly urge the Committee to pass this Resolution.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Laura Bearden
