Let me start with, in its Public Access, Open Spaces, and Natural -Resources Preservation program,
Hawai'i County boasts one of the most innovative and forward -looking conservation tools that counties
anywhere in the US have at their disposal. Simply put, we have the opportunity to protect important
heritage lands by putting them into County ownership, using property tax dollars.
This space is one I routinely enjoy in passing and occasionally pulling over to enjoy the view. All while
acutely aware of the rock formations and historic structures just across the road. This land should be
treated with reverence, honoring its deep cultural significance and the generations of Hawaiian history it
holds.
In addition, as a lover of nature (forests), watersheds, coastal habitat, and Hawaiian culture —are criteria
for PONC acquisition —with that, I join the manyvoices callingfor Honolulu Landing to be purchased
through the program.
With so much development pressure in Hawaii, now is more than ever a time to set aside valuable lands,
protecting them from the vagaries of the private property marketplace.
Several local nonprofit community groups, including groups led by people of Hawaiian ancestry and
lineal descendants, are ready and have the capacity to steward this property, gradually developing
methods of public access that honor the'aina and embody kuleana.
Time is of the essence, with the current owners motivated to sell. Please add your vote in support of this
important acquisition.
