Re: Support for Resolution #286-25 and the Purchase of 364 Acres of an Ancient Hawaiian Village for
Historical Preservation
Aloha Chair and Councilmembers,
I am writing to express my strong support for Resolution #286-25 and for the County of Hawai'i to
purchase and preserve the 364 acres of an Ancient Hawaiian Village known locally as Honolulu
Landing. This land is of immense cultural, historical, and educational value, and it is essential that it be
protected for present and future generations.
The site represents a living testament to Native Hawaiian heritage and the deep connection between
people and'aina. The remnants of this ancientvillage embodythe traditions, ingenuity, and lifeways of
kupuna, offering irreplaceable insight into Hawaiian culture, community structure, and sustainability
practices. Once lost to development or neglect, this history can never be reclaimed.
The overwhelming community support behind this effort is undeniable. The petition to bring Resolution
#286-25 forward gathered more than 1,000 signatures from constituents across Hawai'i Island, uniting
not only Native Hawaiians but also diverse ethnic and cultural groups. This reflects a shared
understanding that preserving this land honors Hawai'i's unique history, strengthens community identity,
and ensures that future generations have a place to learn and connect.
Designating the 364 acres as a Historical Preservation Site would bring long-term benefits to the
County. It could serve as a center for cultural education, archaeological study, and community
engagement. It would also enhance Hawai'i Island's reputation as a place that values and protects its
heritage, drawing interest from residents, visitors, and educators alike.
I urge the County Council to support Resolution #286-25 and commit to purchasing and protecting this
extraordinary site. This is not simply a preservation of land, but a preservation of memory, knowledge,
and identity for all who call Hawai'i home. ljj L
