Dear Council Persons:
I am the chair of the Military Affairs Committee for Hawaii Island Chamber of Commerce. I
speak in strong opposition to this resolution. Some may say "Its only a reso, don't get
worked up about It". I am not worked up but I am embarrassed that you as the leaders of
this county can behave in such form as to be a bad neighbor. To use language like
"bombing" when in fact there is no bombing taking place. To not acknowledge all the good
the military's presence brings to our community. How many of our young people obtain
training and better opportunities through either active -duty service or civilian jobs provided
by the military services needs/jobs.
I have listened to several people complain about the expense of clean up and there is no
fundingfor it. Then why are we spending time accusing the Army of bombingwhen they
aren't. Why don't we discuss clean up funding? Why don'twe get the facts. Have each
and every one of you been to PTA? Have you spoken to the civilian employees who are your
taxpayers and voters just like me? Have you witnessed the pride they do the!rjobs with
which include clean up, accounting for every single piece of ammunition and firearm that
enters and exits that base?
Please table this measure today! Thank you for your attentive listening.
With Aloha,
Mary Bier
Comm.
