My name is Nalani Kaio. I am a resident of Ko'olaupoko, Oahu, Ko Hawai'i Pae'Aina and desc"dant of a
Long line of Kanaka Maoli throughout our archipelago. I am testifying in strong support for this resolution
urging the State of Hawai'i to protect the safety and well-being of Hawaii Island residents by ceasing all
live -fire exercises at Pohakuloa Training Area until a full archaeological inventory survey and Ka Pa'akai
analysis are completed, and by rejecting any lease renewals or land swaps with the military.
Our community has spoken, time and time again, that we do not.want anymore live -fire exercises done
anywhere on our archipelago. The damages may be irreversible if they are to continue further. We would
like the military to have finances and an exit strategy with comprehensive cleanup, restoration and
bioremediation plan to heal the lands it has degraded.
We are struggling as human beings to continue to live on our islands with the continued abuse to our
precious lands. We are done with war, and we are done with being used for "training" for battles we do
not want to be a part of.
It is time we show up for our people and no longer let those who show no care for us and our'aina to stay.
We have the possibility to a brighter future for our keiki and it can start.here. By approving this resolution,
you are giving us and the next generation hope.
Me ka pono no ku'u lahui,
Aloha'Aina,
Hailee Nalani Kaio
