I am writing in strong support of this resolution. Military training activities at Pbhakuloa have already
caused extensive harm —burning nearly 20,000 acres, contaminating the land, and placing endangered
species at risk. Beneath this area lies one of Hawai'i Island's most important aquifers, which supplies
fresh water to our communities. The military's track record makes clear that they are not prepared to
safeguard this critical resource.
There is also grave concern about depleted uranium remaining in the soil, which can become airborne
during exercises and pose serious health risks to residents and service members alike.
Pohakuloa is a wahi pana, a sacred and storied place with immense cultural and ecological significance.
Continued military use is fundamentally incompatible with its protection and with the values of aloha
'aina that guide our stewardship of these lands.
For the sake of the land, the water, and the well-being of our people, I urge you to support this resolution.
