Aloha Council Members,
My name is De Andre Makakoa, and I am submitting testimony in strong support of Resolution 234-25.
For us as Kanaka Maoli and as local people, this resolution is about the future sustainability of our
people. Pohakuloa is a sacred place and it sits above one of Hawai'i Island's most important aquifers.
We are talking about protecting clean water and the basic survival of our families and future generations.
We've already seen the consequences of neglect: nearly 20,000 acres burned, endangered species
destroyed, and contaminants left behind in the soil. Not just in Hawai'i island too, but in Red Hill and
Pearl Harbor and many other places. These issues directly affect food security and public health. If we
are serious about sustainability and building a Hawai'i where our children can thrive, we cannot allow
this kind of destruction to continue.
The Hawai'i Supreme Court has already affirmed in Kahaulelio v. DLNRthat the State has a constitutional
obligation to malama'aina. Resolution 234-25 is a necessary step in holding the State accountable to
that duty and in affirming that Kanaka Maoli, and all who live here, deserve clean land and water.
Please support this resolution and stand up for a vision of Hawai'i that values true sustainability over
short-term exploitation and a perpetuation of war and violence.
I respectfully urge you to vote yes on Resolution 234-25.
