Arakaki, Chair Hawaii County Council Cc: Members, Hawaii County Council From: Julie Jacobson, Member ' Hawaii County Council Subject: Proposed Amendments to Resolution #267 This morning I conducted a meeting attended by Dwayne D. Yoshina, State Elections Officer, Ed Kozohara, County Elections Officer and Pat Nakamoto also of the County Elections Office in reference to my proposed Resolution 267, which is scheduled for review by the Committee on Finance on Tuesday, June 20th. After discussion, it was agreed by all attendees that the following amendments to Resolution #267 should be proposed during the review by the Finance Committee: 1. Delete in its entirety the fifth "Whereas" paragraph which reads: "WHEREAS, current and retired County employees have worked and supervised the five absentee walk-in polls; and"; 2 In the paragraph, "NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that officers of candidates' campaigns or members of the Charter Commission may not be selected as the Chair of the Election Observer Team, and" delete "or members of the Charter Commission"; p Comm. The paragraph that begins "BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that during the ten-day absentee walk-in period..." should be changed to "BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that during the ten-day absentee walk-in period the total number of hours of operation will be comparable at all five absentee walk-in polls; and"; 4. Delete the entire paragraph reading, "BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Office of Elections will actively recruit precinct worker volunteers from sources in addition to current and retired County and State employees and their family members. Examples of other sources are: churches, the University of Hawaii, Hilo and the Hawaii Community College in Hilo and Kealakekua." I ask that these revisions be provided members of the Finance Committee for their consideration prior to the meeting on June 20th.
