Public Testimony on the Proposed Purchase of Honolulu Landing, Puna
o
Aloha Chair and Members of the Council,
o
I am submitting testimony in strong support of the County purchasing the property known as Honolulu
Landing in Puna, Honolulu Landing resolution 286-25, the for the second read of the resolution. This site
holds significant archaeological and cultural value and must be preserved for future generations.
If the County does not take action, this land will be sold, and the opportunity to protect it will be lost.
Requests for County purchase have been submitted to the Council on several occasions, yet no steps
have been taken. Too much of our coastal land and sites of Native Hawaiian significance have already
been sold to developers, resulting in permanent loss of heritage.
Lower Puna, in particular, has historically been overlooked by the County government. This pattern
needs to end. The preservation of Honolulu Landing offers the County a chance to honor its responsibility
to protect cultural and archaeological resources and to invest in the future of Puna.
I urge you to move forward with the purchase of this property and ensure that Honolulu Landing is
protected, not lost.
Mahalo for your consideration.
