Aloha Chair and the members of the Policy Committee on a
Environmental and Natural Resource Management, =r
My name is Tina Marie Even and I am testifying in strong
support of Bill Sg. I also urge you to amend the bill to include
a
ban on single -use plastics, such as plastic water bottles.
Here are four key reasons why this amendment is critical:
Plastic pollution is a direct threat to human and
environmental health. They show up in our bodies and are
easily replaced with safer materials.
Convenience cannot come before survival. We need to focus
on sustainability over just simply what is easiest.
Restrictions encourage progress. History proves that when
single -use plastics are banned, markets respond with innovation.
These policies open the door to new industries and investment in
compostable, regenerative products.
Relief for landfills and support for composting. Phasing out
single -use plastics pairs naturally with efforts to grow local
composting infrastructure. This reduces the burden on our landfills
and improves Hawai`i's food security by producing soil
amendments right here at home. I g
