Aloha Chair and the members of the Policy Committee on Environmental and
Natural Resource Management,
My name is Maki Morinoue, and I strongly support Bill 83. I would also like you
to amend it to include a ban on plastic water bottles in this bill. Just like
raising children, natural consequences prompt us to prepare ahead to avoid
future thirst, and also to implement safe water stations in public spaces for
refilling and drinking.
Plastic pollution is an urgent threat to our health, our oceans, and our future.
Microplastics are now found in our blood and organs, sadly, in every part of
our bodies, as found via autopsies and fluid sample testing. These items are
not essential —they are only a convenience, and safer alternatives already
exist.
Banning single -use plastics will reduce waste, extend the life of our landfill,
support local composting, and drive innovation toward sustainable,
regenerative products. Hawaii has an opportunity to lead by protecting people
and 'aina over plastic profits.
As you all took a bold stance for Pohakuloa, I do hope each and every one of
you can make Hawai'i Island once again a proud example not just for Hawai'i
as pal 'aina, but a global example towards a future to reverse human -caused
mistakes by not perpetuating them.
Mahalo nui loa for all you do. It is not an easy seat to sit in.
