My name is Abigail Rowley and I live in Mokuleia on Oahu.1 have such an admiration for the steps that our
islands have already taken to diminish and reduce single use plastics here in Hawaii. I love that plastic
bags have been successfully banned here and that we as both residents and tourists have found ways to
adapt. However, it is just one small victory and the further banning of all single use plastics would be a
historic and monumental move to show our love and respect for the Aina and for our mama ocean and
her beautiful creatures. I just watched a small video yesterday of a sea turtle who had gotten a straw
deeply stuck into its nostril, as the care team sought to extract it the turtle actually cried out in pain
several times. Blood was leaking from its nose as they tugged and tugged at this deeply lodged straw.
How horrific to think that my diet coke from 7-11 could harm such a beautiful and gentle being. We sort
of have to remove the temptation. Yes., we can bring our own cups and straws and plates and silverware
when eating out or picking up food but the reality is we always choose the easier path. Which is single
use! But by removingthe option we clear the way to a cleaner earth and cleaner oceans. Please I know
you care about our beautifulAina and mama ocean too and will choose accordingly when it comes to
voting on Amendment 20.
