Dear Councilman Yagong:
In the year 2005, PCS (cellular, personal wireless communication companies) will have
unlimited access to the 2 GHz frequency band now being utilized by the County's
microwave system. This system is the backbone for the County's radio system and is
shared with several County and other government agencies. The Fire Department's
VHF radio communication system depends solely on this microwave system for its
island-wide radio coverage. Should we fail to promptly relocate to the 6 GHz band by
2005, our emergency response to 911 calls throughout the Big Island will be seriously
delayed because radio communication will be interrupted by wireless transmissions,
degrading vital County services.
With deep concerns, the Fire Department wishes to solicit your support to secure funds
to upgrade the County's microwave system as proposed by the Police Department.
