WHEREAS, the Lions Club of Kona Community Foundation, Inc. (LCKCFI), is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop and provide community service projects and activities that meet the needs of the community; and WHEREAS, the LCKCFI is requesting funds to cover expenses relating to Native Hawaiian trees, landscaping supplies, signs, soil, and landscape fabric, which will serve a public purpose by benefiting, improving, or promoting the interests of educational concerns, public health and welfare, and culture and the arts; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that, in accordance with section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), Contingency Relief funds from Council District 7 are hereby transferred to the Department of Research and Development to provide a grant to the Lions Club of Kona Community Foundation, Inc., for the expenses and purposes identified in "Exhibit A," a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference, in the following amount as set forth below: FUND: General AMOUNT OF APPROPRIATION: $5,000 OUT AND FROM: 1010-11-10191 Clerk -Council SVC — Contingency Relief CREDITED TO: 1010-11-16122 Department of Research and Development Agriculture R&D OCE 530115 Misc. This project is part of an ongoing initiative that began five years ago and is a component of a comprehensive community outreach effort initiated by the Kona Soil and Water Conservation District eight years ago. The project has included planting at Konawaena Elementary, Middle, and High School. This effort focuses explicitly on planting native trees at Konawaena Elementary School. The planting area covers over 1 acre and aims to include more than 100 native plant species. Konawaena Elementary School has hired a Hawaiian cultural specialist to integrate the plantings into educational activities. Currently, 50 different species have been planted, each marked with signage. This site serves as a community demonstration and a model for learning about Hawaii's native plants. *44.501(c)(3) Mission Statement To develop and provide community service projects and activities that meet the needs of the community. *45. For the past rive years, the Leo Club, the Lions Club, and the Kona Soil and Water Conservation District have partnered to educate the Kona community about environmental conservation, including deforestation. The organization continues to plant native trees on the Konawaena Elementary School campus and aims to complete the planting of 100 native species, with signage. *46. To date, there has been little effort to educate students in the Konawaena school system about native trees. This project aims to provide elementary students with awareness of Hawai'i's native plants. The general population's lack of understanding of native species has contributed to widespread deforestation of upland and dryland forests in Kona. By educating students and the community, the project seeks to foster stewardship and encourage planting of native species rather than introduced or invasive ones.
