The Food Is Medicine Pilot Program is a 10-week nutrition education and cooking initiative designed to promote healthy eating and strengthen intergenerational community connections. The program will be held at the Kea'auSenior Center and will serve up to 20kOpuna. Throughout the program, participants will engage in weekly nutrition education sessions and hands-on cooking classes focused on preparing healthy meals with locally grown produce. Each participant will also receive two meal kits per session to take home. Meal kits will be prepared in collaboration with Kea'au High School's agriculture and culinary students, providing valuable learning experiences for students while fostering meaningful connections between youth and kOpuna. Baseline and post -program health vitals will be collected with assistancefrom pharmacy students at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy. By integrating local agriculture, culinary education, and nutrition awareness, this program aims to enhance the health and well-being of participating kupunawhile supporting the next generation of food system leaders. *46. 5O1(c)(3) Mission Statement To end hunger in Hawaii County. *47. Alongside its core food banking work, The Food Basket Inc. operates programs such as DA BOX CSA, DA BUX Double Up Food Bucks, K6kua Harvest, and Malama Da Farmer to expand access to healthy, locally grown food. The Food Is Medicine pilot at Kea'au Senior Center supports this mission by offering k0puna hands-on classes that teach them to prepare simple, plant -forward recipes using Hawai'i-grown produce. Fresh ingredients will be supplied by Kea'au High School's agricultural program and local farmers, with culinary students helping prepare ingredients and digital media students producing instructional videos. Each klipuna will receive two recipe kits per class, making it easier to recreate meals at home. Strengthen Intergenerational Engagement: At least 15 students will assist with growing, prepping, or filming, and both kupuna and students will report a stronger community connection. Support Local Agriculture: Program produce will be sourced from Keeau High School and at least 3 Hawari Island farms throughout the pilot.
