The IGpuka Farmacy project is an integrative Hawaiian Healing Center designed to strengthen community health through education, engagement, and access to culturally grounded wellness practices. Rooted in traditional Hawaiian knowledge and supported by contemporary scientific research, the project centers on a living mala la'au (medicinal plant garden) that provides a hands-on learning environment for individuals, families, and kupuna. The garden cultivates key Hawaiian medicinal plants —such as'uhaloa, noni,'olena,'awa, kukui, kalo, and others —selected for their ability to reduce harmful inflammation and support the prevention and management of chronic diseases common in the Puna community. The project promotes self-sustainability by cultivating thousands of starter plants annually for distribution to community members, empowering households to grow their own food and la'au at home. Educational workshops, health literacy initiatives, and culturally informed wellness coaching help participants build practical skills in self-care,'ohana care, and lifestyle restoration, including physical movement, nutrition, and traditional healing practices. The Kpuka Farmacy also honors the legacy of the late Kumu Dane Kaohelani Silva, a respected kahuna la'au lapa'au whose teachings and vision guide the project's development. As part of the future Puna Community Medical Campus, the Kpuka Farmacy serves as a living classroom, nursery, and community resource dedicated to improving health outcomes and advancing holistic wellness for Puna residents. *44. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement To promote and support the Puna Community Medical Center in providing readily accessible health care to the residents of, and visitors to Puna. *45. PCMCF develops, operates, and oversees the Kpuka Farmacy as part of its Hawaiian Healing Center initiative. The organization manages the garden, coordinates educational and wellness activities, cultivates and distributes starter plants, and ensures the project aligns with broader goals of improving public health, cultural preservation, and community resilience. The mala la'au will serve as a living classroom, with measurable outcomes including the number of plant species grown, the number of garden enhancements completed, and the level of volunteer and community participation.
