The Build Green, Build Local Conference is a one -day, public -facing educational and demonstration event to be held on February 11, 2026, at'Imiloa Astronomy Center, hosted by Think B.I.G. (Big Island Green). The conference advances the theme "Localize Everything: Building the Future from the Ground Up;' focusing on the use of locally sourced, climate -resilient building materials and systems to strengthen island self-reliance. The event will convene builders, architects, policymakers, educators, landholders, farmers, financiers, insurers, and community members to explore how local materials —such as bamboo, hemperete, eucalyptus,'ohra, basalt -based products, cinder, and experimental green composites --can be responsibly scaled, permitted, financed, and trained for broader use on Hawari Island. Programming will include panel discussions, technical presentations, policy and permitting workshops, financing and insurance conversations, and a hands-on demonstration village featuring live builds and material demonstrations. Conference tracks will address regulatory innovation, workforce development, design templates, training pipelines, and the role of localization in climate resilience. The project emphasizes education rather than development, and is designed to inform County policy, support workforce training, and expand public understanding of sustainable construction as part of broader food, energy, water, and economic resilience strategies for Hawari Island. *44. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement Enable an economic, social, and overall environmental revival for Hawari through a just transition to 100% clean, locally sourced, renewable energy. *45. The conference directly advances Think B.I.G:s mission by educating the public and policymakers on strategies to increase local self-reliance, climate resilience, and sustainable building practices. Sustainable Energy Hawai'i (SEHI), a Hawari-based 501(c)(3), is serving as the fiscal sponsor for the event. The event is expected to engage approximately 150-250 participants, including builders, architects, students, policymakers, landholders, and community members. The conference will provide at least 20 structured educational sessions, panels, and demonstrations focused on local materials, permitting pathways, financing and insurance considerations, workforce training, and design strategies. Participants will gain an increased understanding of how locally sourced materials can be responsibly scaled, permitted, financed, and integrated into building practices on Hawai'i Island. Measurable outcomes also include strengthened collaboration between local government, educational institutions, and industry professionals. The conference will facilitate direct .dialogue to identify regulatory barriers and opportunities for innovation related to local materials and resilient construction. Following the event, organizers will compile session summaries and develop a draft "Local Building Roadmap" outlining recommended next steps for workforce training, pilot projects, and potential policy or permitting reforms.
