RE: Related to Bill 83
I am writing to you today as a member of the Hawaii Food Industry and a strong supporter of the
Hawaii Restaurant Association, the Hawaii Manufacturers Association and the Hawaii Farm Bureau.
I am submitting this testimony to express my serious concerns regarding Bill 83, which I believe will
negatively impact local businesses and, more importantly, the local people you represent.
Upon reviewing our store shelves, I was surprised to discover the extensive number of local businesses
that will be affected by Bill 83. This is in addition to the poke, marinated meats, salsa, liver, bakery, and
bento containers currently used in our stores. Furthermore, it is concerning that imported products are
allowed to use these types of containers, while is it banned for local products.
As an island state, we are surrounded by water, and I fully agree that we need to address our landfill
problem. However, we should be seeking long-term, sustainable solutions. Our county currently lacks
a waste -to -value facility, and Bill 83 appears to be a short-term solution that has far-reaching
consequences beyond its initial scope.
