Subject: Testimony: Reso 320-25 on Due Process and Protection of our Constitutional Rights
Members of the County Council:
My name is Tina Marie Even, and I'm a resident of Waikoloa Village. I'm here to express my strong support for Resolution
320-25, affirming the fundamental principle of due process and equal protection for all people, regardless of their
immigration status.
Our Constitution ensures that no one is deprived of life, liberty, or property without fair legal proceedings. This right does
not depend on citizenship. The Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments are clear: "no person" - not "no citizen" - shall be
denied due:process or equal protection under the law.
When our local government affirms this principle, it sends a powerful message that justice and fairness are values that
belong to everyone in our community. Protecting due process for all helps ensure trust in local institutions, strengthens
public safety, and upholds the integrity of our justice system.
Policies that single out immigrants or deny them basic procedural rights don't make us safer. When people fear that
seeking help from law enforcement or the courts could lead to detention or deportation, it erodes trust and undermines the
rule of law.
I urge the council to adopt Resolution 320-25 and reaffirm our county's commitment to fairness, justice, and o stitutsonal
rights for all residents.
