The concept of due process, a chance to make one's case before the courts if accused, is a fundamental aspect to our civil society. We are a Nation and a State of laws Those laws protect the citizens and non -citizens alike. The current behavior of ICE agents, masked men rounding up people in our streets and In their homes, then deporting them to foreign countries without a judicial warrant or any chance to make a legal case for their defense amounts to kidnapping and human trafficking. 1 am asking you and your colleagues in the State Legislature to call for a special session to make whatever laws or resolutions necessary to stop this illegal behavior. These agents, and their superiors, are trampling on the laws of our State and our Nation and need to be held accountable. They need to be prosecuted: in the State Court System if that can't done in the Federal System. Maybe the state should sue the Federal Government. Perhaps that would give them pause.State assets, land, facilities, funds nor personnel should in no way be used to support these illegal behaviors. No county law enforcement personnel be used either. Anyone who knowingly supports these illegal behaviors is complicit and should also be held to account. They certainly will be at the ballot box. Let me be clear, If someone is in our country illegally, then actions should be taken. However there is a legal process and although it is sometime slow and cumbersome, that process protects the rights of us all. I also take great offense to the fact that none of these people's employers are being prosecuted. What is up with that? They are breaking the law by employing these undocumented people. They take advantage of these workers by paying low wages, often in unsafe conditions, and providing no legal recourse those workers. That gives the employers an unfair advantage in the marketplace over companies that do follow the law. Note that a large part of that economy is done in cash, thereby skirting tax reporting and payments. For far too long our country has kicked this issue down the road. It has gotten wav out r of hand. It's hard to blame the poor hard-working undocumented immigrant. Most are honest and are just looking for a better life for their family. Let's fix it. A simple work visa Is a good start. Aligned state legislatures could bring pressure on federal legislation. More funding for immigration courts would remove the present backlog of cases. More funding for state labor law enforcement would also help reduce the employment of illegal laborers, by unethical employers It's time to actl This Federal Administration is using the immigration issue as an excuse to erode our rights. It is not acceptable to me that our government ignores our due process rights in any circumstance including immigration arrest, non-violent protestor any constitutionally protected activity.
