Aloha esteemed Council Members,
My name is Kawehi Young, and I am writing to express my strong support for Resolution
334-25, which appropriates contingency relief funds to support the 2025 Hale Festival.

The Hale Festival is more than an event —it is a gathering grounded in community, 'ike, and
shared kuleana. It was born from the recognition that our connection to hala, both as a cultural
and ecological resource, is vital to the health of our lahui.
This festival addresses the urgent need to protect and preserve hale forests, which face
increasing threats from invasive species and habitat loss due to expanding development.
Events like the Hala Festival provide opportunities for the public to learn traditional hala weaving
techniques, deepen appreciation for the cultural and ecological significance of hale, and engage
in meaningful dialogue about protecting HawaiTs natural resources for future generations.
In addition, the Hale Festival supports local economic resilience by providing artisans, cultural
practitioners, small businesses, and community organizations with a platform to share their work
and support the livelihoods of those who carry on cultural traditions. By supporting this event,
we not only celebrate our heritage but also invest in the sustainability and vitality of our island
community.
I respectfully urge your support for the allocation of funds to ensure the continued success of
the Hale Festival and the positive impact it brings to Hawai'i Island residents. Mahalo for your
