Dear Members of the Hawai'i County Council,
My name is Charles Cravalho, and I have the privilege of working closely with the youth of our
community, helping to raise them as the next generation of environmental leaders. I am writing today to
express my strong support for Bill 83, Draft 2, the proposed ban on single -use plastic foodware in Hawai'i
County. This bill is an essential step toward protecting our environment and empowering our out

As someone who works with young people, I see first-hand the power of education and example. The
youth of Hawai'i are increasingly aware of the devastating impact that plastic pollution has on our
oceans, wildlife, and the overall health of our environment. They are motivated to make a change, but
they need the support of their community and leadership from our local governmentto create lasting,
positive change. By passingthis bill, the Countywill not only reduce plastic pollution but will also send a
clear message to young people that their efforts to protect the planet are supported and valued.
For years, I've worked with localyouth to instillvalues of sustainability, responsibility, and leadership.
We teach them the importance of reducingwaste and embracing more Earth -conscious alternatives to
everyday products. Single -use plastics are a major barrier to these goals, and we have seen how difficult
it can be to make lasting changes when the environment continues to be inundated with disposable,
non -biodegradable materials. A ban on single -use plastics in foodware would directly support the efforts
we are makingto raise a generation of young people who value the health of our planet and understand
the need for responsible consumption.
The proposed ban will give local businesses, and especially the youth, the opportunity to innovate and
explore sustainable alternatives. The younger generation is eager to find creative solutions to the
problems we face, and by eliminating single -use plastics, we can encourage businesses and individuals
to embrace biodegradable, reusable, or eco-friendly materials. I believe this policy will not only create a
cleaner, safer environment but also help to shape the values and practices of future leaders.
While I understand there may be concerns about the impact on businesses, I am confident that this
transition will be manageable and, in the long run, beneficial. In my work with young people, I have seen
how resourceful and adaptable they can be, especially when they are given the tools and guidance to
succeed. The County could also consider providing support or incentives to help small businesses make
the shift to sustainable alternatives, much in the same way we encourage youth to embrace new habits
for the benefit of the environment.
By passing Bill 83, Hawai'i County will set a positive example not only for other communities across the
state but for future generations of leaders who will continue to fight for the protection of our
environment. Our youth are ready to take the reins, but they need us to take bold action now. I urge you
to support this bill and give the next generation the opportunity to lead by example.
