Aloha Chair and Councilmembers,
I am writing to express my strong support for Bill 83, which seeks to ban single -use plastics on Hawai'i
Island. This legislation represents an important step toward protecting our oceans, supporting
sustainability, and preserving the natural beauty that defines our islands.
Single -use plastics are among the most harmful pollutants affecting Hawai'i's marine environment. They
break down into microplastics that harm marine life, coral reefs, and ultimately enter our food chain.
Given Hawai`i's geographic isolation and limited recycling infrastructure, the majority of plastic waste
generated here is either incinerated or ends up. in our landfills and oceans. This unsustainable cycle
threatens both our environment and our long-term health. 1

Furthermore, reducing single -use plastics aligns with Hawai'i's commitment to malama'aina—to care
for our land and oceans. Tourists from around the world visit our islands for their pristine beaches and
clean waters. Continuing to allow single -use plastics undermines the very image that sustains our
tourism economy. By enacting Bill 83, Hawai'i Island can set an example for the rest of the world in
prioritizing sustainability and environmental stewardship.
I urge the Council to pass Bill 83 and lead our community toward a cleaner, healthier, and more
sustainable future.
