Testimony in Strong Support of Bill 83, Draft 2 and All Its Amendments
Aloha Chair and Councilmembers,
My name is Cristina Holt, and I live in Council District 3. I'm writing to express my strong support for Bill
83, Draft 2 and all its amendments.
Single -use plastics have only been a part of our lives since the mid-1950s. That's just one generation...
About the same amount of time Hawai'i has been a "state." In that short time, we've found ourselves
drowning in a culture of convenience —a throwaway culture that sells us the illusion of ease while
quietly choking our planet.
We are told this is normal. That this is just the way things are. But that's a lie —and the proof is simple. If
something so destructive could take hold in only one generation, then we can absolutely choose to
change it in the next.
We've already done it before. We banned plastic bags— and the world didn't end. In fact, it got a little
cleaner, a little better. Bill 83 is the next step toward the world we want to live in: one built on reuse,
respect, and responsibility.
Let's show our keiki that leadership means courage. Let's remind each other that "normal" is something
we create— not something we're trapped in.
Please pass Bill 83, Draft 2. Let Hawaii Island lead the way toward a cleaner, safer, and more
sustainable future. V
