Subject: Testimony Regarding Bill 52 - Household Henneries
Aloha Chair and Council Members,
Thank you for your time and service. I'm writing as a resident of Hawaii Island and a parent who relies on
backyard egg production to help feed our family. With the high cost of living and recent government
shutdowns, access to affordable, homegrown protein is more important than ever.
Raising hens has not only supported our nutrition; it's become a way for our children to learn
responsibility, stewardship, and how to care for the land and animals. It's hands-on education in
sustainability, and it connects them to the food they eat.
While I appreciate the effort to clarify household henneries, I'm concerned that the proposed 20-fowl
limit and ban on egg sales, even in agricultural zones, could unintentionally hurt families who are doing
their best to be self-sufficient. Many of us have the space and experience to responsibly raise more birds
and share eggs with neighbors or supplement income modestly.
Mahalo for considering the bigger picture and for your commitment to our community. I trust that
together, we can craft a policy that protects public health while empowering families to steward their
land and nourish their communities.
