WHEREAS, the Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens (FOLG) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that prepares for activities and festive events throughout the year and is dedicated to fostering, improving, and maintaining the 24-acre cultural landscape at Lili`uokalani Gardens; and WHEREAS, the Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens is requesting funds to cover expenses for wire bristle brushes, cement, masonry tools, stonemason labor, and grant administration for the ongoing restoration of the wall of Waihonu pond, which will serve a public purpose by benefiting, improving, or promoting the interests of culture and the arts and the public health and welfare of the people and the environment; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that, in accordance with section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), Contingency Relief funds from Council District 3 are hereby transferred to the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide a grant to the Friends of Lili`uokalani Gardens for the expenses and purposes identified in "Exhibit A," a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference, in the following amount as set forth below: FUND: General AMOUNT OF APPROPRIATION: $3,000 OUT AND FROM: 1010-11-10191 Clerk -Council SVC — Contingency Relief $3,000 CREDITED TO: 1010-51-50302 Department of Parks and Recreation $3,000 P&R Admin OCE 530115 Misc. Waihonu is an ancient Hawaiian fishpond at the heart of Lilruokalani Gardens. Its stone walls, built over a century ago, are deteriorating and need ongoing repair. Friends of Lilruokalani Gardens is working to restore these walls, preserving both the pond's structure and its cultural significance. The pond stretches nearly 5,000 feet around, and when restoration began two years ago, about 10% of the walls required immediate attention. *43. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement Friends of Ulruokalani Gardens prepares for activities and festive events throughout the year and is dedicated to fostering, improving, and maintaining the 24-acre cultural landscape at Ulruokalani Gardens. *44. Through a Memorandum of Understanding with the County of Hawaii Parks and Recreation Department, the organization mobilizes over 1,000 volunteers annually to care for the park's features, including gardens, structures, and historic sites. The Waihonu Wall Restoration aligns directly with our mission, as it preserves a vital cultural and ecological resource, supports sustainable fish habitat, and ensures the continued enjoyment of the Gardens for the public. *45.
