Friends of First Responders created the children's book "When My Hero Comes Home" with support from a therapist
and a graphic artist, and input from first responder parents. The book was designed to be culturally relevant and
gender -inclusive and to help open communication between first responder parents and their children about the unique
stressors they experience due to parental exposure to danger, shift work, and emergency callouts. The book was
introduced at Friends of First Responders' first Kids' Camp, held during the 2025 Fall Break at the Island of Hawaii
YMCA, where it was read and discussed with participating children, and each child received a copy to take home. With
County support, Friends of First Responders seeks to have additional copies available for distribution and use at future
first responder family events they are developing during the project period. The purpose of this project is to support
communication, understanding, and family resilience within the first responder community on Hawaii Island.
