WHEREAS, Kahua Pa`a Mua, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to enhance communities through economic, conservation, preservation, social, and educational programs for youth and adults; and WHEREAS, Kahua Pa`a Mua, Inc., is requesting funds for large tent rental, public announcement system rental, entertainment, compostable paper products, propane tanks, and public outreach for the Kohala Intergenerational Center's 20th Anniversary event, which will serve a public purpose by benefiting, improving, and promoting the interests of culture and the arts, educational concerns, and the public health and welfare of the people and the environment; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`I that, in accordance with section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), Contingency Relief funds from Council District 9 are hereby transferred to the Department of Liquor Control to provide a grant to Kahua Pa`a Mua, Inc., for the expenses and purposes identified in "Exhibit A," a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference, in the following amount as set forth below: FUND: General AMOUNT OF APPROPRIATION: $2,000 OUT AND FROM: 1010-11-10191 Clerk -Council SVC — Contingency Relief $2,000 CREDITED TO: 1010-21-25139 Department of Liquor Control $2,000 Public Programs 530115 Misc. The Kohala Intergenerational Center (KIC), located at Kamehameha Park, is celebrating 20 years of partnership and .service to the North Kohala community. Completed in 2004 through a grassroots effort to create a safe and inclusive gathering space, KIC represents the power of collaboration between residents, local government, and nonprofit partners. In the early 1990s, North Kohala faced some of the highest substance abuse rates in Hawaii. Determined to bring positive change, local leaders and community partners united to develop a place that would strengthen families, support youth, and foster cultural connections. Although the initial site was later deemed unsafe, the community's dedication never faltered. With the guidance of committed leaders and the support of County officials and local contractors, KIC was realized and later gifted to the County of Hawaii as a lasting symbol of collective effort. Today, KIC continues to host youth, cultural, and community programs that enrich lives and strengthen intergenerational bonds. On March 14, 2026, from 10:00 a.m, to 2:00 p.m., Kahua PSa Mua will host a Wok Cook -Off in celebration of KIC's 20th anniversary, honoring the Center's founders and community achievements. The event will showcase products from local Kohala farmers, promote agricultural resilience, and highlight the uniqueness of diverse ethnic cuisines for the public to enjoy, while fostering fellowship, learning, and cultural appreciation. *46. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement Dedicated to enhancing communities through economic, conservation, preservation, social, and educational programs for youth and adults. *47. Its founding Executive Director, David Fuertes, played a key leadership role in the original planning, construction, and community partnerships that brought the Center to life. Building on that legacy, Kahua Pa'a Mua continues to promote youth mentorship and agricultural education through programs such as Ka Hana No'eau, which engages 50-100 students annually in hands-on learning in crop production, animal husbandry, aquaculture, saddle -making, gardening, and culinary arts. The organization also hosted past "Wok Cook -Off" events that united government officials, community groups, and youth participants, fostering intergenerational learning and showcasing the power of community collaboration.
