Dear Chair Inaba, Vice Chair Onishi, and Members of the Committee:

My name is Greg Cabanting and I am the General Manager for Minit Stop. Minit Stop is
a convenience store chain with ten Big Island locations. Bill83 would create a burden
for food service businesses like ours.
First, it drives up costs. Compostable versions are more expensive. Containers can
cost up to 50% more and compostable utensils can double the cost. These prices will
in effect be passed on to our customer.
Next, compostable containers do not holdup well. For example, we tested
compostable bento containers a year ago. The lids did not hold up well in our food
warmers. In addition, forks and straws break with regularity.
The intent of Bill83 to reduce plastic and polystyrene waste and align with our County's
zero -waste vision is commendable. We are aligned with the vision and are always looking
for and testing environmentally friendly alternatives that is reasonable in cost and can
meet quality and performance standards.
