Thank you for the opportunity to testify regarding the implementation of a biodegradable plastic single
use products.
Although these biodegradable plastic flatware as well as containers and tableware have been available
in Hilo foryears, they are expensive. I ordered them for a Democratic Party event in 2016 from a local
vendor.
The cost of these containers has been prohibitive for many local shoppers. However, the need to reduce
the non-compostable plastic load on the landfill is becoming increasingly critical. Therefore, I support
efforts to eliminate the use of non -biodegradable plastic packaging, picnic dishes, and flatware.
I suggest that the economy of scale of biodegradable products may reduce the costto consumers. But if
it does not, then the county should create a tax rebate to offset the expense to the citizens.
