A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO BIRD AND BEE HAWAIJ ANIMAL SANCTUARY TO SUPPORT ITS 2026 WORLD BEE DAY HAWAIJ EVENT. WHEREAS, Bird and Bee Hawaii Animal Sanctuary (BBHAS), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals and honey bees through protection, rehabilitation, and education, fostering a balanced and sustainable coexistence on Hawaii Island; and WHEREAS, BBHAS is requesting funds for venue rental fees, which will serve a public purpose by benefiting, improving, or promoting the interests of culture and the arts, educational concerns, and the public health and welfare of the people and the environment; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAIII that, in accordance with section 2-139(a)(2)(C) of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), Contingency Relief funds from Council District I are hereby transferred to the Department of Liquor Control to provide a grant to Bird and Bee Hawaii Animal Sanctuary for the expenses and purposes identified in "Exhibit A," a copy of which is attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference, in the following amount as set forth below: FUND: General AMOUNT OF APPROPRIATION: $2,000 OUT AND FROM: 1010-11-10191 Clerk -Council SVC — Contingency Relief $2,000 CREDITED TO: 1010-21-25139 Department of Liquor Control $2,000 Public Programs 530115 Misc. In 2026, World Bee Day HawaVi will be held on May 16 at Mokup�papa Discovery Center, aligning with the global observance while delivering a locally focused event for the County of Hawai'i. The program provides free, public educational workshops, demonstrations, and community engagement opportunities that highlight the essential role bees and other pollinators play in local food production, Pollinators support many of the fruits, vegetables, and seed crops relied upon by farms and households across the island. By increasing awareness of pollinator health and best - practice hive management, World Bee Day Hawai'i strengthens local food systems and community self-reliance. Activities include introductory beekeeping education, best practices in hive management, pollinator health awareness, honey -harvesting demonstrations, youth -focused science activities, and presentations by experienced local beekeepers and agricultural partners. Information is practical, science -based, and tailored to Hawaii's unique conditions. World continuing education pathways, By convening farmers, educators, students, and families in an accessible, family - friendly setting, the program strengthens community networks and promotes responsible stewardship of agricultural resources. The initiative supports Hawai'i County Contingency Relief Fund priorities by expanding access to agricultural education, promoting local food resilience, and fostering community preparedness through measurable participation and engagement.
