SUBJECT: HDEDC Committee Prese ion on the "Energy Star Homes" Program
Your Committee on Human Services and Economic Development wishes to offer a briefing
presentation to Council members and the viewing public on the "Energy Star Homes" program on
July 6, 2000 at 1:OOPM. The program is supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, as well as participating utilities, home builders, and mortgage lenders. The "Energy Star
Homes" program provides incentives for installation of solar water heating systems including
favorable mortgage rates, lower utility bills, and enhanced resale value.
Ray Carr, County of Hawaii Research & DeN elopment Department, Pat Moore, Energy Service
Analyst, HELCO, and Dave Mulligan, President, White Sands Construction have generously
agreed to offer the Energy Star Homes presentation at the next scheduled HSEDC meeting on
July 6"'
For your information, a program brochure prepared by HECO and some recent EPA guidelines
are attached. With the recent participation of HELCO, a Kona contractor, and American Savings
Bank here on the Island of Hawaii, I believe this presentation will offer valuable information to
prospective homebuyers and island homeowners alike.
