SUBJECT: Resolution 280-00
Resolution Creating a Motor Vehicle Registration Clerk I for the
Department of Finance, Treasury Division, West Hawaii
During discussion at the Finance Committee meeting yesterday, Councilman Tyler requested
information about the number of motor vehicle transactions handled by the Hilo office of the
Treasury Division. Attached is a comparison of Hilo and Kona transactions for the calendar
year 1999 as well as for the first five months of 2000. These numbers do not include notices
of transfer or rejected items, where a person comes in without the proper paperwork, and time
must be taken to explain what is needed to complete the transaction.
The Treasury Division in Hilo is staffed with eight motor vehicle registration clerks, and the
Kona office presently has three. Five of the positions are funded by the State of Hawaii
because the County collects the state motor vehicle weight tax along with the county tax and
fees.
