Re: County Resolution 603-26 Urging the DAB to implement and enforce INTERIM Rule 26-1.
Aloha County Council,
We are writing to urge you folks to pass resolution 603-26 to fully implement and enforce Plant Quarantine
Rule 26-1 under the Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity. You well know the spread of CRB in Hawaiʻi
and the damage that this pest is already doing to our neighbor islands. Rule 26-1 is in place now but the
work begins to contain this threat. BISC just captured a CRB in Hilo and are very concerned about the
introduction of this potentially devastating insect.
Makahanaloa Fishing Association represents over 140 fishing ʻohana from Hilo. We rely on niu (coconut) for a
variety of reasons including cultural practice, food, bait, clothes and many more. CRB does not operate on a
government timeline. Please pass this resolution to urge the DAB to act with urgency!
Hawaiʻi Island will suffer devastating losses of native (endangered) species, food security, and the economy
of Hawaiʻi Island. We need DAB to do their job and help to manage and eliminate this threat to Hawaiʻi
Island.
Mahalo nui,
Blake McNaughton
President
Makahanaloa Fishing Association
