This event, held in Puna Makai, celebrates our local food ecosystem, with a focus on locally cultivated and harvested proteins. The main response heard from attendees at the 1st annual event last year was "When is the next one?!" So this will be the 2nd annual Smoke It Up, as branded last year. Local chefs will be creating original dishes featuring beef, Iamb, pork, goat, sheep, venison, fish, and mushrooms — all Hawai'i-raised and sourced, including feral animal meats. Monies raised will go directly toward increasing food processing capacity in Puna, which can be utilized by hunters/trappers and local livestock producers to ensure the products enter the local food chain and provide a protein source to help combat food insecurity on this island. The event includes tastings, informational booths, music, and hula. * 43. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement Malama 0 Puna is a Hawai'i nonprofit 501(C)(3) corporation and volunteer service organization that focuses on environmental health, community sustainability, and stability. Our mission is to protect critical habitat, native species, open spaces, and traditional cultural landscapes for future generations through hands-on projects, environmental education, advocacy, and networking. *44. In 1,000 characters or less, explain how the 501(c)(3) is connected to the project. Malama 0 Puna has made Food Security one of its primary activities, given that food insecurity is one of the district's biggest issues. Starting with food provision efforts following the 2018 lava eruption, which displaced many households, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which further disadvantaged the Puna population attempting to feed their families, Malama 0 Puna has engaged in projects designed to provide nutritious foods both in giveaway programs, backyard gardening programs, the establishment of community gardens/fruit orchards, and the development of a permaculture garden. Feral pig meat, if vetted for disease and properly cooked, provides an excellent protein source to help provide a nutritious food supply to the public. * 45. Please upload a completed CRF Grant Budget Form. CRF Budget Form.xlsx Public Purpose of Requested Funds Per §2-138 of the Hawaii County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), the County may grant an award only if the proposed program or service provides direct public benefits and fulfills a public purpose within the County. 46. According to §2-136, "public purpose" is defined as a benefit to, improvement of, or promotion of the interests in the following areas. Please select all the public benefits to be derived from your County fund request: Educational concerns Needs of the poor, youth, the aged, those with physical or emotional disabilities Public health and welfare of the people and the environment 47. In 2,000 characters or less, describe the measurable outcomes you aim to achieve with these funds. The festival aims to attract 300 attendees to sample dishes from professional chefs made with feral pig meat butchered in compliance with USDA food safety laws and regulations. Chefs participating in this competition will provide recipes to be used in a cookbook to help spur demand for feral pig meat products. Ticket sales will be used to evaluate the event's success; interviews may be conducted during the event to assess the public's reaction; and attendees will be invited to submit an evaluation as they leave, which will guide future festivals. A website will be produced to attract attention to the event and efforts to mitigate feral pig issues on the Big Island, so viewership can be assessed. Response to social media advertisements will also be tracked.
