Biodiesel fuel and recycling
I would life to share one more item of importance in the realm of recycling. T ani
not sure how many County vehicles, generators and other pieces of equipment are
operated with diesel fuel? I mould imagine it is a significant number. Cu resth
there is a private company on Maui that manufactures diesel fuel from i e!zesable oil
(waste oil). Yes, fuel is being produced from a iiaste product that on this island has
some problems iiith being recycled. This is an excellent recycling effort. Cr-tenth
the cost of the fuel for use in stationary motors is $1.95 per gallon. If it is us' ,O bt
vehicles then 51 cents worth of government taxes are added.
Use of biodiesel is both assisting iiith the recycling of a waste product and r,r~_lizbig a
fuel source that is non-polluting and renewable. I hope you hill direct the
appropriate County staff to look into using this fuel. Again, this an oppw ri for
the County to show leadership and take action in an area that supports su:.'. '-Ag
our beautiful island environment and the environment of the planet. The :;am

information was gathered from their website.
This company sells fuel and it also builds plants. I would hope that County s aff trill
immediately look at using the fuel in County diesel motors AND study the m °sible
construction of a plant to be operated by the County for future fuel needs.-:cant
operated by the Comity (or its agent) could do two significant things. Firs,, -ould
provide a means of productively recycling vegetable oil that currently ha
method of waste recycling on our island at this time. Second, it could pro ; t:.
source of clean burning and sustainable fuel for operation of County mac°.'-, r_r and
vehicles for the future. My understanding is that a plant could be built foe
5300,000. I have no interest in this company and the information I have -d
iiith you was gathered from their website and one e-mail I sent asking aft--
questions.
I urge you to direct your staff to follow up and report to you on the curreon; :ability
of biodiesel and the tremendous future benefits that could be accrued to tit? _-'ounty
and its residents.
