PATH will purchase and install 4-5 bike racks in Kailua Park, between the Kekuaokalani Gymnasium and the Kona Community Aquatic Center. Patrons currently using the facilities don't have a place to lock up their bikes, so they either lock them to the pool fence, try to bring them into the gym, or leave them on the sidewalks outside the buildings. PATH wants to encourage people to ride their bikes to swim or to use the park, and hopes that installing bicycle racks will give park patrons a secure spot to park their bikes. PATH will also work with the Kailua Village to install bicycle-style racks on County property by the Kailua Pier and the King Kamehameha Hotel for people coming to the pier to swim and fish. *49. 5O1(c)(3) Mission Statement To champion and educate on safe, accessible, and active transportation opportunities in communities throughout Hawai'i Island. *50. The PATH board of directors, staff, and supporters believe that publicly accessible trails, bikeways, and pathways do much to revive Hawaii's unique history, allow us to live sustainably as islanders, preserve our fragile natural environment, and build strong community relationships. The ability to talk story with a neighbor, fish along the shoreline, ride a horse through the mountains, go for a walk with one's spouse, or ride a bicycle to school are the daily activities of life in Hawai'i that build trust, connect all of us both socially and culturally, provide daily physical activity, reduce energy demand and keep pollutants out of the air and water. *51.
