Dear council chair and members,
Reading Bill 179 has a concerning issue for me. It stood out to me is that the current code explicitly
anchors R&D's work in "sustainable economic, societal and environmental practices," including areas such
as sustainable agriculture, alternative energy and waste management, ecological education, green
buildings, and protection of biodiversity. Bill 179 would repeal the existing article and replace it with new
language that does not carry forward that same sustainability and environmental framework.
The bill would also eliminate the Sustainability Action Committee and its duties, while restructuring R&D's
responsibilities largely around economic and workforce development.
