Aloha Councilmembers,
Please ensure that serious concerns about Waikoloa Green, re. water availability, fire danger, and
evacuation routes, are addressed.
Environment Hawai’i estimates that projects now being built in the area, and projects likely to be
approved, will put the daily draw from the aquifer over 90 percent of sustainable yield. This would lead
the Water Commission to consider designating the area a water management area, requiring users to
obtain permits for withdrawals. What happens if there’s not enough water for all the withdrawals
requested?
Wildfire Safety Advocates has expressed alarm at the wildfire risk posed by the grasslands in the area.
And the Waikoloa Village Association has urged that adequate emergency evacuation routes be
established before more development goes forward, to avoid life-threatening evacuation delays like
those during the Mana Road fire in 2021.
What are the liability consequences if the County is warned of potential harm by credible sources, but
approves a project anyway?
