Hilo is home to a thriving theatre and performing arts community that is brimming with talent. Every year, musical theater productions grow in spectacle, production value, and audience attendance. Through conversations with performers and audience members, Mama Arts has recognized a desire to explore non-musical theater("straight plays") as well. Through a monthly Play Reading Series, Malama Arts sees an opportunity to give audiences and performers more exposure to plays without the pressure of mounting a full-scale production. Every other month, Mama Arts will ask a director to gather actors together to rehearse and then read a play for a live audience. Previously, Mama Arts has showcased local works (Uncle's Regularly Scheduled Garage Party Is Canceled, Lee Cataluna), classics (Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,Tennessee Williams), and contemporary plays (Stop Kiss, Diana Son). Mama Arts will also ask the community to submit titles that interest them. Since debuting the Play Reading Series in Jan of 2026, Mama Arts has received incredible community feedback and is excited to embark on the second installment, starting January 2027. This installment will expand the director and performer pool by soliciting submissions and will incorporate a $100 director's fee to compensate directors for their time and expertise. *44. 501(c)(3) Mission Statement To malama (care for)the people of Hilo and Hawai'i Island by fostering connection and creativity through performing arts and arts education. *45. With input from the wider team, Erin will select the plays and directors and will coordinate with the venue and license holders to secure performance dates and rights. She will also be responsible for final reporting. *46. Please upload a completed CRF Grant Budget Form.
