I reside in Waimea and oppose Bills 186 & 187 for the following reasons: No Environmental Assessment: A 716-acre project with no completed environmental assessment? We deserve to know the impact before a single shovel hits the dirt. Wildfire Evacuation Risks: Infrastructure is already stretched thin. Following recent fires with traffic backed up for hours, we know how dangerous a bottleneck evacuation can be. This project makes an existing safety hazard even worse. Adding hundreds of homes without another evacuation road and a real evacuation plan is a severe risk to lives. Water Risks: Developers haven't shown that our limited fresh water from the Waimea aquifer (that stretches from Kawaihae to Waikoloa) won't be negatively impacted without causing future water restrictions. The amount of water being pumped out of this aquifer for residential developments, resort areas, pools, and golf courses are near its capacity of the sustainable yield of 16 mgd. This doesn't take into account those projects already approved in this region that haven't started extracting water yet. Zero Community Input: Developers have failed to properly inform or consult with the Waikoloa Village community. Residents are being left in the dark about plans that affect their future.
