Aloha Chair and Members of the Council,
I am writing as a local Hawai ʻ i resident who depends on income from our rental unit to help make ends
meet.
With the rising cost of living in Hawai ʻ i, every bit of additional income makes a difference. Our rental
income helps us pay our mortgage, property taxes, insurance, and everyday expenses. It is not extra
money or a luxury. It is something our family depends on in order to continue living in Hawaii.
It is disheartening to continually see legislation and regulations that make it harder for local property
owners to maintain this source of income. We understand the need for rules that protect our
communities and neighborhoods, but there also needs to be consideration for local families who are
simply trying to get by.
Not every property owner is a large investor or corporation. Some of us are everyday local people who
have worked hard for what we have and rely on one rental unit to help support our household.
Additional restrictions, fees (we just registered and spent $500. Really, does it have to be this costly?),
and changing requirements create financial stress and uncertainty for people like us. We ask that the
Council consider the impact these decisions have on small local property owners before moving
forward.
We are not asking for special treatment. We are simply asking for fairness and consideration. Please
remember that behind every rental property is a real person or family who may depend on that income.
We want to continue living, working, and raising our families in Hawai ʻ i, but it is becoming harder to do so
when the cost of living keeps rising and opportunities to supplement our income become more difficult.
Please consider the local families who are affected by these decisions.
Mahalo for your time and consideration.
Kindly,
The Piercys
