Sakada Day is an annual community celebration that recognizes and honors the first major wave of Filipino migration to Hawai'i, which began with the recruitment of the first 15 sakadas—plantation laborers brought to Hawai'i under contract by Hawai'i's Sugar Planters`Association. These first 15 men arrived in Honolulu on December 20, 1906. In 2015, Governor David Ige signed a bill into law officially designating December 20 as Sakada Day in Hawai'i to commemorate the arrival, sacrifices, legacy, and historic contributions to making significant improvements for all plantation laborers and Hawaii's labor movement. Sakada Day has been celebrated annually in Hawai'i Island beginning in 2015 with special recognition to living Sakadas. The Sakada Day program includes exhibits educating the public about Sakada history through oral histories and archival materials, recognition of Sakadas and their descendants, Filipino refreshments, and cultural performances. This year, we celebrate 120 years since the first wave of Sakadas arrived. The theme for Sakada Day 2026 is"Sakada 120: Rooted in History, Inspiring New Voices,"and seeks to connect Sakada descendants and future generations of Filipinos to Sakada history. *36. 5O1(c)(3) Mission Statement The Filipino American National Historical Society, Hawai'i Island Chapter, is a chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to promote understanding, education, enlightenment, appreciation, and enrichment through the identification, gathering, preservation, and dissemination of the history and culture of Filipino Americans in the United States. *37.
