SUBJECT: TRAFFIC CODE AMENDMENT
TRAFFIC SIGNAL UPGRADE, Federal Aid Project No. STP-0100(60)

The Department of Public Works is working on a project to improve pedestrian and traffic safety and
circulation at various signalized intersections in downtown Hilo. Included in this project is a proposed
left turn lane and traffic signal improvements at the Ponahawai Street/Kilauea Avenue intersection. A
location map is attached.
Ordinance 98 62 (effective date July 2, 1998) eliminated 9 parking stalls to accommodate the proposed
left turn lane on Ponahawai Street at Kilauea Avenue. We did not implement Ordinance 98 62 sooner
because the downtown traffic safety project was still in its early stages and had not progressed to
Ponahawai Street.
To compensate for the loss of these stalls, we will provide six additional long-term parking on the makai
side of Kilauea Avenue fronting the Ben Franklin parking lot.
