Honorable James Arakai, Chairperson and Members of the County Council
Hawaii County Council ~25 Aupuni St.' ~Hilo, Hawaii, 96720
Subject Reference: Proposed Capital Budget Expenditure for a Police Sub-station at
Waikea Uka Gym
Gentlemen;
It has been brought to my attention by Mr. Willie Ferreira that there is a real need for a
community level police sub-station in the Waikea Uka Gym area. I am writing this letter
in support of his efforts to bring this project to reality.
As so often happens with community development and the continued increase in
population other needs arise in areas of public service and protection. With the fact that
our Hawaii County Police department is stretched so thin over a larger than average
geographical area there is a requirement for a "police presence" at our neighborhood
level.
Considering the location of the Waikea Uka Gym, read somewhat isolated and the
activities that occur "after hours" this area would certainly warrant the installation of a
neighborhood police sub-station. As a nine year resident of Hawaiian Paradise Park we
are also given to these "after hours" activities. I would suggest to the council that similar
consideration be given to other outlying and rural neighborhoods. This would give area
residents a better sense of security and the ability of the police to respond in a more
timely manner. I believe it would also promote a better relationship between the Police
Department and County of Hawaii residents.
I thank you for your kind consideration in this regard.
Sincerely;
