As you will recall, we originally planned to erect three new units at an estimated cost of $90,000. A review of the design stimulated us to consider the economy of building two duplex units which would accomodate four families instead of three. Additionally, these new units would be one-third larger than our exisiting 12 x 16 foot units and so will be able to accomodate larger families and provide a bit more privacy for the adults. Subsequent studies indicated that we could do this for the same cost of three individual units so this new plan was approved. As of today, Fred Yamashiro, our Advocate and Contractor, is in the process of getting approvals, permits and engaging contractors who are willing to donate their time and material to the project. Fred expects to break ground sometime in late October and we hope to have our first families in by Christmas. Fundraising has continued and at this time we have in hand or pledged about 85% of the $90,000 estimated cost. We still have a few promises which have not yet converted to pledges and hope that these and publicity from the groudbreaking will put us over the top. To all of us involved with the shelter, the need for temporary housing of families trying to get reestablished in our community is everyday apparent. There always are at least six families on the waiting list despite our success at transitioning our residents to permanent housing (eight so far this year!) and the problem is expected to grow as the new welfare regulations begin to fully effect many marginal families. Our long term goal is to continue to expand the shelter to help meet this need. But more on that later. For now, Mahalo Nui Loa for your generous financial and emotional support of Ka Hale O Kawaihae and the many people who have and will benefit from your kindness. Sincerely Yours, Laura K.
