Dear Chair Arakaki:
This is to provide testimony in support of Mayor Kim's appointment of Mr. Christopher
Yuen to be the Planning Director [or the County of Hawaii.
I have had the good fortune in working with Mr. Yuen while he served as the Hawaii
Island member on the Board of Land and Natural Resources. Throughout his tenure on
the Board, he has been very supportive of our State Parks initiatives and an able advocate
to implement our projects on the Big Island, including the many other types of projects that
our department is responsible for. He is afair-minded person who has been willing to sit
down with others to work on difficult solutions. The kinds of issues he has confronted as
a Board member is not unlike the issues he will face as a Planning Director and his past
Board experience can only enhance his understanding of diverse planning issues in order
to make good decisions.
I believe it is this kind of seasoned and caring perspective that he consistently showed is
what he will bring to the county for the long term good of your county residents, off-island
visitors and the welfare of the Big Island's important natural resources, sensitively balanced
with sound developmental decisions to maintain a growing and healthy economy.
Thank you for your consideration of my testimony in support of Mr. Christopher Yuen as
your county's Planning Director.
